More Frequently Asked Questions...

Guest Book Questions:

Why does it sometimes take so long for a guest book to post? Virtual Memorials has a rigorous filter for the guest books to prevent spam and inappropriate content from being posted.

The VM filter blocks inappropriate message posted that are hurtful in anyway. They are automatically removed from the system before being uploaded on any guest book. Our VM filter also blocks unsolicited spam. Quite frequently gambling, weight loss, pharmaceuticals (or worse) kinds of websites attempt to send through thousands of solicitation spam through the guest books. It can often cause the system here to take hours to process them all (auto delete them) The guest book comments usually go through within an hour but can take up to 12 hours.

How long do names stay on the recently created list?

Typically a few weeks. Memorials that include photos are listed on the recently created list shortly after they have been created. If your memorial did not appear on the frequently created list please contact us. (This could occur if you added photos days after you initially created the memorial.)

How can my loved one be a featured memorial?

The featured memorials are placed on the front page after a review process. Once accepted and payment received of $200 a photo and link will be made and posted to the Virtual Memorials.com main page. The featured memorials remain on the front page for a one year time period. View Featured Memorials to learn more

Are there other places in Virtual Memorials to feature my loved one?

Yes. Any of the main category pages of Virtual Memorials (Birthdays, Young Children Teenagers, Parents, Fallen Hero's etc) have special spaces to feature memorials.

I need help with uploading photos

Only half of my photo shows, what happened?

This is most likely to be the result of a photo size issue. Please try the following … Open the photo(s) you are uploading to your memorial in a photo editing tool and reduce the size by 40-50% Don't compress the photo but if you can see the way to reduce the size that's ideal. The photo will then upload much faster to vm. It may be that you are loosing the connection during the upload because of the size. The photo will automatically be compressed to load quickly when visiting a memorial so there is no need to compress on your side. You can also try to re upload and give it a bit more time during the upload. If you have any trouble please email us the photo(s) along with the name of the memorial you are working on and we will post for you.

Change a Photo…I changed a photo within my memorial and the old one still shows for me, what do I do?

Your new photo is actually posted but some computers "cache" the original photo and so it still shows. Just click refresh on your screen and you should see the new photo.
Steps to replace a photo:
1. Delete the photo click save changes
2. Add the new photo and click save changes
3. Refresh your screen
Anyone new coming to your memorial would see the new photo but sometimes you need to re-fresh to see the change.

How do I add video files to my memorial?

You can play a video on any of your memorial pages by adding adding the code provided by any of the video hosting companies. Virtual Memorials does not host video files within each memorial. We recommend using youtube.com but you are able to use any of the video hosting sites.
To upload a video please go to
1. www.youtube.com
2. Sign up for a free account if you don't have one
3. Upload your video file
4. Copy the "code" youtube displays once your video is uploaded (it is the embedded code in the box below your video)
5. Paste that code directly into any text box area of your virtual memorial -- on any page (go to your loved one's virtual memorial in edit mode) Be sure to click the "source" button above the text box before adding the code. (This is what makes the computer read the code rather than display the code)
6. Click save change and leave edit mode

Why are my photos gone?

If your photos no longer appear on your memorial it is because the 14 day trial for the full featured memorial has expired. Your memorial has been converted to a free memorial which will not display photos. At anytime the memorial can be sponsored at which time the photos and additional pages that were created during the trial time will be posted and visible again.

I can’t find my loved one’s memorial in the search… where is it?

Please don’t worry, we do not remove memorials (unless there is a content issue or a direct request from the family to remove it) Your memorial will come up exactly has it was originally created. If you type in the name and nothing comes up please try typing in just the last name and click submit or just the first name and click submit and look through that list. (For example if a memorial was made for Robert Peace and you are searching for Bob Peace nothing will come up) It must be an exact name match or you can search my first name initials or last name initials.

How do you delete a page that you created within a memorial?

There is a button near the top which allows you to delete a page. It is present when you are in Edit mode and are on the page.

I am concerned that someone may leave an inappropriate comment on my loved one's guest book – how is this prevented?

There are two ways to protect against anyone leaving an unwanted message on your memorial.

  • First we have in place our rigorous vm filtering system. There are hundreds of "bad" words that will cause the comment to be deleted before it was sent to a memorial and trigger phrases that require additional review.
  • Secondly you also can have control over what is posted within your loved one’s memorial by selecting to have all guest book comments approved by you before they are be posted on the memorial. To select to have your guest book comments approved by you before they are posted please: 1. Go into edit mode 2. Scroll down on the first page in edit mode 3. Click "Approval Mode" for guest books. 4. Click save changes. The guest book remarks will then be sent to you in an email for approval before they are shown on the memorial.

How do I make my loved one’s memorial private?

Once you are in edit mode scroll down to the section that reads make this memorial private (it defaults to a public memorial) select private and type in a password you would like to use to view the memorial and click save changes. Please make this password different than the password you have chosen for editing the memorial. Click Save Changes. You will need to give out this password to anyone you wish to view the memorial

How long do memorials stay online?

Virtual Memorials does not remove any memorial unless it is requested by the family or contains inappropriate content. Your memorial stays here for as long as virtual memorials is online. We have been online since 1996 - the first and longest operating online memorial company.

How do I find my loved one's memorial ID to add their photo to another memorials' guest book?

In edit mode you will see your loved one's memorial id.

Thank you for choosing Virtual Memorials to honor your loved one
